GOD doesn’t call you by surprise. HE already has a plan wrapped and waiting — bigger than you can imagine. The only question is whether you’ll respond.

Pastor Angel Luis Rosa opened Sunday’s message with a line that stopped the room. Not because GOD is stingy with HIS love — HE calls everyone out of darkness into HIS light — but because GOD does not call people who refuse to respond. An invitation received and never activated is still just an invitation.

He built the whole message on 1 Samuel chapter 3 — the night the boy Samuel, ministering before the LORD under Eli, heard his name called three times before he understood who was speaking. “Samuel did not yet know the LORD,” Pastor Rosa pointed out. “He’s in church. He’s in the presence of GOD. He’s at the gathering. But he did not know the LORD.” The WORD of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him.

“Speak, LORD, for YOUR servant is listening.”

1 Samuel 3:9-10

“In order for you to receive the invitation, you’ve got to respond to the invitation,” Pastor Rosa said. The day anyone gave their heart to JESUS, it was because they responded — something tugged, the SPIRIT of GOD stirred, and a decision was made. It works the same way with the deeper things GOD has for a life already saved. “It’s possible to turn a deaf ear to the call of GOD,” he warned, “and just refuse to activate that invitation.”

It took three calls before Samuel understood, and even then, he needed Eli to tell him what to say. Pastor Rosa treated that moment as an altar call before the altar call. “That’s your confession today,” he told the church. “Speak, LORD, for YOUR servant is listening.”

“GOD does not call anyone without a plan in mind,” Pastor Rosa said, comparing it to his wife preparing to host: the house cleaned the night before, the table set, everything hidden away that shouldn’t be seen — all because she wants the presentation right when the guest walks in. “GOD has prepared a plan for you,” he said, “that is far beyond you can ever imagine or even think. Eyes have not seen. Ears have not heard.”

He made it personal. At 22, facing 20 years in a Texas penitentiary after years of addiction and crime, Pastor Rosa reached between the bars of a jail cell in Killeen and found a Gideon Bible. It opened to Jeremiah 33:3 — call to ME and I will answer you and show you great and mighty things you did not know. “GOD, if you approve, you can change my life,” he prayed, “because there’s no way I can change it by myself.” He described the SPIRIT of GOD coming into that room and turning a heart of stone into a heart of flesh.

The transformation was real enough that a probation officer noticed it before sentencing, brought it to the judge, and Pastor Rosa walked out with five years’ probation instead of twenty behind bars — on the condition that he enter a program called Team Challenge. “It was a fight of faith,” he was careful to say. Not a bed of roses. GOD provided for him to finish college, his criminal record was later expunged entirely, and the work he began in the inner city eventually earned him an invitation to testify at a congressional hearing on drug abuse.

He carried that same theme into how churches get built. A woman he met while ministering to her son wrote an $80,000 check toward land for a new church. Later, a man who had just sold his company for a windfall handed over $1.5 million so that congregation could build debt-free. “Don’t rely on the miracles of the past,” Pastor Rosa said. “GOD’s got new miracles for you today.”

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Pastor Rosa drew a distinction the church needed to hear. The logos, from John 1:1, is the written WORD — “in the beginning was the WORD, and the WORD was with GOD, and the WORD was GOD.” The rema is different: a specific, timely WORD spoken by the HOLY SPIRIT directly to a person, for a specific situation. “When GOD tells you to move, you move,” he said. “When GOD tells you to sell, you sell. When GOD tells you to buy, you buy. But you’ve got to get that revealed WORD.” And that revealed WORD, he said, comes only when someone responds to the invitation and says, “LORD, speak, for YOUR servant is listening.”

He turned to Psalm 139:16 — YOUR eyes saw my unformed substance, and in YOUR book were written the days appointed for me, when as yet there was not one of them. The Hebrew word for appointed, he explained, carries the sense of being placed on a potter’s wheel for a divine purpose. “Stay in the wheel,” he told the church. “Don’t get off the wheel.” Part of the molding process includes cracks — moments GOD has to pound the clay again and rebuild it. “You’re not what you were,” he said, “but you haven’t finished. HE’s not finished with the product.”

He closed with three questions he said the HOLY SPIRIT is asking every person in that room right now: how long will you stay asleep while the world grows darker? How much longer will you chase after things that can never satisfy the yearning of your soul? And are you going to leave this place with just an invitation — or are you ready to activate your faith and respond to the call of GOD in your life?

The Call of GOD was never meant to stay an invitation on a shelf. From a jail cell in Killeen to a debt-free church building, Pastor Angel Luis Rosa’s own life is the case in point — GOD had a plan the whole time, and everything changed the moment he responded.
