The Heart of a Servant

From Servanthood to Commitment · Part 1

The Heart of a Servant is where every calling begins, Pastor Angel Luis Rosa told The Gathering Church on September 22, 2026, opening a brand-new four-part series called From Servanthood to Commitment — because before anyone leads, teaches, or prophesies, they serve.

Pastor Angel Luis Rosa, The Gathering Church, Hormigueros, Puerto Rico

Pastor Angel Luis Rosa

Every ministry title is a servant’s title, Pastor Angel Luis Rosa says — and the heart of a servant starts long before anyone ever hands you a role.

“The word disciple really means discipline.”

Pastor Angel Luis Rosa opened the new series with a warning before he ever got to the encouragement: when believers pursue GOD’s will, it produces real, sometimes uncomfortable change. Staying stagnant does the opposite — a church that isn’t moving isn’t a river, it’s a cesspool. Even something as small as gossip, he said, is really just the sign of an “unemployed Christian” — a believer with no assignment, filling the space with something other than service.
That assignment always traces back to the same foundation. CHRIST did not give the church gifted leaders so they could be admired — HE gave them to equip HIS people for the work of serving one another.
“CHRIST gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip HIS people for works of service, so that the body of CHRIST may be built up… until we all reach unity in the faith and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of CHRIST.”
Ephesians 4:11-13

Every Title Is a Servant’s Title

Pastor Rosa was direct about a trap that catches people the moment they step into any ministry role: pride in the title. Prophet, evangelist, pastor, teacher — every one of those words describes a servant first. “Don’t get prideful in the title,” he said. “He’s a servant, he’s a servant, he’s a servant.” Even the highest title in Scripture didn’t come with an exemption from serving.

“Even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give HIS life as a ransom for many.”

Mark 10:45
Pastor Rosa grounded this in stories from ordinary moments, not stages. His son Elijah struck up a conversation with a friend vaping at a school carnival and used the moment to point him toward CHRIST. Pastor Rosa and his wife felt led to stop and encourage a receptionist they found in tears in an eye doctor’s parking lot. And Ada shared her own testimony of continuing to give even in the middle of real financial hardship, watching GOD meet a debt she couldn’t have covered on her own — as she put it, GOD simply has “a bigger shovel.” None of these moments required a title. They only required a servant’s heart already in motion.
“
“Every ministry is a servant-based ministry. When it says prophet, he’s a servant. Don’t get prideful in the title.”
— Pastor Angel Luis Rosa

A Servant’s Heart Starts With an Emptied, Renewed Mind

Before anyone can serve well, Pastor Rosa said, something has to be emptied out first. CHRIST HIMSELF is the pattern: HE emptied HIMSELF, took on the form of a servant, and humbled HIMSELF all the way to death on a cross. For most people, what needs to be emptied isn’t glamorous — it’s resentment from being hurt at a previous church, or a preconceived idea of what ministry is supposed to look like. Those have to go before service can begin.

“Have the same mindset as CHRIST JESUS… HE emptied HIMSELF, taking the form of a servant… HE humbled HIMSELF by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”

Philippians 2:5-8
Emptying is only half of it — Pastor Rosa pointed to Romans 12:2 for the other half: don’t conform to the pattern of the world, be transformed by renewing your mind, so you can actually test and approve what GOD’s good, pleasing, and perfect will looks like. That renewal is practical — your thinking about church, about ministry, about giving, can all be reprogrammed. And Philippians 4:8 gives the filter for what fills that renewed mind: whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and admirable. “You cannot think about two things at once,” Pastor Rosa reminded the room — so choose, deliberately, what occupies your mind, especially when pressure tempts you toward fear or complaint instead.

The Heart of a Servant Is Proven in Love

Pastor Rosa moved from the mind to the motive, and the clearest picture he gave was JESUS kneeling at HIS disciples’ feet with a towel and a basin — the LORD serving the ones HE led, not the other way around.

“If I, your LORD and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.”

John 13:14
Without love behind it, Pastor Rosa warned, even the most sacrificial-looking service is empty. Giving everything to the poor still gains nothing if love isn’t the motive. Real obedience means submitting your own will to GOD’s WORD — and real love, he said, chooses to believe the best about people rather than assume the worst, which is the only way to stop a cycle of constant suspicion and judgment before it starts.
He illustrated it with a story about a homeless man named Mike, who once asked Pastor Rosa for money — for a rope. Pastor Rosa refused the money, but he didn’t walk away. He prayed for Mike, and pushed past his own discomfort to hug him. Mike broke down. “They not only have to hear the WORD,” Pastor Rosa said, “they’ve got to see the WORD.”

“If I give all I possess to the poor… but do not have love, I gain nothing.”

1 Corinthians 13:3
Pastor Rosa closed the teaching with three practical ways to serve from a heart of love instead of burning out. First, notice the unseen — the need itself is the calling. He pointed to Joan Gray, a volunteer who started the church’s children’s ministry and is still serving those kids today. Second, drop the hidden agenda — serve as unto the LORD, not for thanks from people. And third, start small. Love doesn’t wait for a massive platform, and it usually doesn’t arrive as a booming voice from heaven. More often, Pastor Rosa said, it starts as a quiet stirring in the heart — and the only requirement is being willing to act on it.
“The need is the calling.”
Pastor Angel Luis Rosa
The Heart of a Servant is only Part 1. Over the next three weeks, From Servanthood to Commitment will move from this foundation into the shift to leadership, catching the vision, and counting the cost of commitment. Pastor Rosa’s charge to close the night was simple: don’t wait for a title before you start serving — the heart of a servant is available to anyone willing to notice a need and respond to it in love.

Reflect & Respond

Where has GOD already shown you a need that no one else seems to notice — and what would it look like to treat that need as your calling?
