The Promise is in the Process
Citizens of HEAVEN · Living on Earth
The Promise is in the Process — and if you have ever felt like GOD has forgotten you in the waiting, this message was preached for you. That is the word Pastor Angel Luis Rosa brought to The Gathering Church on April 21, 2026 — a study of Philippians 3 drawn from a life that knows what it means to obey GOD through seasons that made no sense at the time.
Pastor Angel Luis Rosa
What if everything the world told you that you needed — your credentials, your reputation, your connections — was actually the very thing standing between you and the life GOD designed for you? What if the path to your calling ran straight through the things you least wanted to do?
“It took a hundred times saying yes, LORD, to the things that I really didn’t care to do — before the big ministry of traveling and preaching to hundreds of people became a reality.”
There is a version of the Christian life that nobody puts on a highlight reel. No one posts the cleaning of the church toilets. No one makes a testimony video about sweeping the parking lot after everyone else went home. But Pastor Angel Luis Rosa stood before the congregation that Tuesday morning and told the truth: it was precisely those invisible, unacknowledged acts of obedience that built the foundation underneath everything GOD eventually gave him. The congregants gathered at The Gathering Church heard not a polished ministry showcase, but a man’s honest account of what it actually costs — and what it actually produces — when you decide to trust GOD completely.
His text was Philippians 3 — the Apostle Paul writing from a Roman prison that smelled of sewage, facing execution, with one of the greatest missionary journeys of history behind him. And yet Paul’s message to the church at Philippi was not despair. It was joy. It was a radical reorientation away from credentials and flesh-confidence, and toward something far more durable: the surpassing worth of knowing CHRIST JESUS as LORD.
“I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing CHRIST JESUS my LORD, for whose sake I have lost all things.”Philippians 3:8
Put No Confidence in the Flesh
When Paul warned the Philippians to “watch out for the dogs” — the legalists demanding circumcision and works-based righteousness — he was dismantling a trap that is just as active today. Legalism, Pastor Rosa explained, whispers the same poison in every generation: that you are not good enough for what GOD has for you. That your past disqualifies you. That you have to be perfect before HE can move in your life. It is a lie dressed in religious language, and it will keep you stuck.
Paul’s answer was not to try harder. It was to shift the foundation entirely — from flesh to SPIRIT, from credential to CHRIST. As Romans 12:2 declares, transformation comes through the renewing of the mind — not conformity to the world’s system that says worth is earned by what you own, who you know, or how high you climb. The world’s ladder runs the wrong direction. In GOD’s kingdom, the way up is always through surrender.
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
Romans 12:2“HE loves you the way you are, but HE loves you too much to let you stay that way.”— Pastor Angel Luis Rosa
Consider Everything a Loss for the Sake of Knowing HIM
Pastor Rosa did not preach this message from a distance. He preached it from experience. He told the congregation about leaving a comfortable position in Dallas, walking away from a good salary and a thriving church community, because GOD said to go to Phoenix and minister in the inner city. He went with a list of conditions. His pastor told him to tear it up and come with a clean slate. And so he went — to a ministry housed in a 500-square-foot office, with one volunteer secretary who did not share her coffee, ministering to people struggling with addiction in a neighborhood where gunshots punctuated the night. He went — and GOD showed up.
The Apostle Paul understood this surrender. He had every credential the Jewish world could offer — circumcised on the eighth day, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Pharisee by training, zealous beyond measure. And he called all of it garbage. Not because credentials are evil, but because compared to the living reality of knowing CHRIST JESUS, nothing else comes close. When you have tasted the surpassing worth of HIM, everything else loses its grip.
“Therefore, if anyone is in CHRIST, the new creation has come: the old has gone, the new is here!”
2 Corinthians 5:17And when you become a new creation in CHRIST, the people around you may not celebrate the change. Friendships may dissolve. Family members may grow distant. People who were loyal when you had money or status may disappear when you choose a different life. Pastor Rosa knew this deeply — the gang connections from the Bronx, the army buddies, the neighborhood friends — all gone when he chose CHRIST. But what replaced them was something no earthly network could provide: the faithfulness of a GOD who provided a house with a pool in Paradise Valley, food for his boys, and blessing upon blessing in every season he chose obedience over comfort.
The Promise is in the Process — Your Obedience Is Building Something
This is where the sermon landed with the weight of a life fully lived. Press on — not because the road is easy, but because the destination is real. Not because the suffering makes sense in the moment, but because every season of obedience is building something you cannot yet see. Pastor Rosa put it plainly: it took a hundred acts of saying yes to the unattractive assignments — the children’s church, the swept floors, the tuna casserole dinners, the silent Christmases in an empty dormitory — before the wider ministry became a reality. There are no shortcuts to what GOD is building in you.
He also drew from his own calling moment — sitting in jail, facing twenty years, opening a Bible for the very first time to Jeremiah 33:3: “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things that thou knowest not.” That was the word that broke him open. And from that broken place, GOD built something no human credential could have manufactured. The counselors said he was dysfunctional and would never be a productive member of society. The WORD said he was called. He chose to believe the WORD — and the WORD proved itself faithful, over and over and over again.
“I press toward the prize of the high calling of GOD in CHRIST JESUS. Just keep pressing on, folks.”Philippians 3:14 · Pastor Angel Luis Rosa
Whatever season you find yourself in right now — the invisible season, the season of tuna casserole and moldy bread and a van with a cigarette burn in the velvet seats — do not quit. The greatest testimony you will ever carry is that you went through it and came back to tell the story. GOD is not late. HE has not forgotten you. Your obedience is the training ground for everything HE has promised. Press on.
