Keys to a Lasting Relationship — Part 3, Maximizing Your Marriage Series

Citizens of HEAVEN · Living on Earth

Keys to a Lasting Relationship is what Pastor Angel Luis Rosa unpacked in Part 3 of Maximizing Your Marriage, continuing the series at The Gathering Church on September 8, 2026 — walking the room through the first two letters of a framework built to help homes survive the storms that are coming, not just the ones already here.

Pastor Angel Luis Rosa

Marriage was never meant to run on feelings alone. Pastor Angel Luis Rosa says it takes wisdom, honor, and the courage to keep talking when it would be easier to shut down.

“It’s not a matter of if. It’s a matter of when the storms come your way in relationships.”

Pastor Angel Luis Rosa opened Part 3 the way he opens every session in this series — reminding the room that the teaching isn’t only for spouses. The same principles that hold a marriage together also govern how you relate to an uncle, an aunt, a grandmother, a grandfather. At The Gathering Church, he had a word for anyone tempted to skip a Tuesday because “my relationship is fine”: the storm isn’t a maybe. It’s a when.
The key to building a lasting relationship, he said, requires spiritual understanding and GOD’s wisdom — not feelings. Marriage was GOD’s plan from the very beginning, going back to Genesis, where GOD formed Eve out of Adam’s own rib. That was never a contract. That was, and still is, a covenant — and GOD is serious about covenant.
“Husbands, love your wives, just as CHRIST loved the church and gave HIMSELF up for her.”
Ephesians 5:25

Marriage Is a Covenant, Not a Contract

“You cannot do what GOD requires of you until you understand that marriage is about doing HIS will, not your own,” Pastor Rosa said — pointing straight at the Lord’s Prayer: not my will, but YOUR will be done. That single shift, he said, is the one a lot of people never make. “We’re all desiring to surrender,” he told the room. “But I’m not going to obey what GOD has told me to.”
He was careful to say this is not a condemning word for anyone who has walked through divorce. “You can survive divorce,” he said. “You can make it through.” There will be consequences — that is the reality of it — but GOD is a merciful, forgiving, restoring GOD, able to bring anyone HE has called out of a season back into HIS perfect will.
From there, Pastor Rosa laid out the order GOD established for the home. Before any human authority, before any husband, CHRIST stands at the head. “A husband’s authority makes him entirely accountable to CHRIST for how he treats his family,” he said. The husband leads from the position of unconditional, agape love — the same love CHRIST showed the church, the same love that submitted itself to the FATHER at the cross even though, as Pastor Rosa put it, “HE didn’t want to be there.” Submission, he was careful to add, does not mean inferiority. It’s a choice for the sake of divine order, and when there is unity in the home, there is unity in the church. Divide the family, he warned, and you divide the church — which is exactly why Paul’s letter to the Ephesians moves from marriage in chapter 5 straight into spiritual warfare in chapter 6.

“The head of every man is CHRIST.”

Blessed and Edified: The First Two Keys

Pastor Rosa is teaching the marriage series letter by letter, and week three landed on the first two: B for Blessed, and E for Edify. Blessed, he explained, means experiencing a deep, unshakable well-being — and Ephesians 5:22 is where it starts. “When a wife misses the true meaning of biblical submission,” he said, “it stops her from leading a blessing to her husband.” He acknowledged the tension the word carries in a culture built around equal rights, but held his ground: GOD has an order, and HE is a GOD of order.
On the husband’s side, he pointed to 1 Peter 3:7 — a husband dwelling with his wife with understanding, giving her honor. Citing research, he told the men that a genuine compliment releases dopamine in the brain, lowering stress and building happiness, and that happy couples run at roughly five positive interactions for every one negative. “When a man takes time to build up and honor his wife,” he said, “you are building a strong foundation of her self-confidence, her self-esteem — and as a consequence, he builds up the flames of love.”

“Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife.”

1 Peter 3:7
Edify, he said, is a construction word — it means to build up, and no builder skips the foundation. “If the foundation is messed up,” he warned, reaching for the three little pigs as his illustration, “the walls are going to come tumbling down.” That is why a single person cannot make a decision about who to marry based on looks alone. You have to see someone not only at their best moment, but at their worst — because the vows say for better or for worse, and dating only ever shows you the better. Proverbs puts it plainly: by wisdom a house is built, and understanding is what establishes it. And whatever foundation gets laid becomes a legacy. “If there’s conflict in the home, and that’s all that child knows,” Pastor Rosa said, “when they grow up and get married, you marry that conflict — unless GOD can change it.”

Keys to a Lasting Relationship Begin With Sharing

The third key is S, for Sharing — being real with each other. “Emotional connection is the bridge to physical intimacy,” Pastor Rosa said. “If you don’t help build the bridge, you can’t cross over.” And when someone says their relationship feels dead, he pushed back on the word itself. Death in the Bible is simply separation, not the end — which means a dead relationship is not beyond hope. “Separation is restorable,” he said. “GOD can resurrect dead things.”
He was specific about the cost of silence. Skip deep conversation and let emotional issues pile up, he said, and this is exactly where it leads: dissatisfaction, then anger, then rejection, then bitterness, and finally a closed spirit — the most dangerous stage of all, when someone checks out completely and stops caring. “You live like roommates sharing the same bed,” he said, “but living a million miles apart.” At that point, flowers do not fix it. A new dress does not fix it.
For anyone in that heavy place right now, his counsel was direct: don’t rush it. The disconnect took time to form, and rebuilding is a shared journey, not a quick fix — especially where trust has been broken. Both people have to agree to stop rehearsing the pain of the past, because the enemy’s whole strategy is to keep accusing. “We got to stop rehearsing the pain of the past,” he said, pointing the room toward Philippians 3:13-14 instead — forgetting what is behind, pressing toward what GOD has ahead. Celebrate the small progress. Trust the HOLY SPIRIT to make what comes next stronger than what came before.
B for Blessed. E for Edify. S for Sharing. Next week, Pastor Rosa promises, comes the T — and he’s not skipping it. Bring a friend, bring a couple who needs it, and bring your notes back for Part 4.
“GOD can resurrect dead things.”

Keys to a Lasting Relationship is not a single conversation or a single Tuesday — it’s a covenant GOD is still building, one honest conversation at a time. If your relationship feels heavy tonight, that is not the final word. HE is not finished.

Reflect & Respond

Where in your relationships have you mistaken separation for something GOD already called dead — and what would it look like to let HIM resurrect it?
