The Price of Commitment

From Servanthood to Commitment · Part 4

The Price of Commitment is Part 4 of From Servanthood to Commitment, and Pastor Angel L. Rosa told The Gathering Church on October 13, 2026 that commitment is a choice: choosing obedience over feelings, and staying faithful when it costs us comfort, control, and time.

Pastor Angel L. Rosa, The Gathering Church, Hormigueros, Puerto Rico

Pastor Angel L. Rosa

There is a price when you commit, Pastor Angel L. Rosa says, and the prize is worth far more than the price.

“Commitment is a choice. It’s choosing obedience over feelings.”

Pastor Angel L. Rosa opened with a welcome and a smile. If you’re breathing today, he said, and you’re not in the hospital, and you’re not arrested somewhere, you are in the right place. Then he reminded the church what this four-week series has been building toward. The first message was about servanthood: whether you consider yourself a prophet, a teacher, a preacher, an evangelist, or a missionary, you are a servant. The second was about shifting to leadership, because GOD calls us to maturity, and “new levels, new devils.” The third was about catching the vision, because without a vision the people perish. Today, the final part: the price of commitment.

New · Now on YouTube

The Gathering Church is now on YouTube. This service is available there as a new way for our church family and the wider online community to join us from anywhere, in addition to Facebook Live. Pastor Angel L. Rosa welcomed everyone tuning in on the new channel and invited them to like, subscribe, and share it with friends, because it is a blessing for people to know there is an English-speaking church in Hormigueros, Puerto Rico. “The flavor of Puerto Rico will be projected through this by the SPIRIT of GOD.” Watch links are at the bottom of this post.
He added a word for those serving on the platform and behind the scenes. Because people are tuning in online, everything done on the stage has to be done with them in mind. The first impression is the lasting impression, and consistency is what makes people come back. We can thank JESUS for all the technology, but we have to be good stewards of it, because careless work hides the excellence of CHRIST in us.
“No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of GOD.”
Luke 9:62

Commitment Is a Choice, Not a Feeling

Feelings come and feelings go, Pastor Angel L. Rosa said, and that “preaches all by itself.” You hear the WORD, you say yes to JESUS on Sunday, and by the next day somebody makes you mad and you announce that you’re never coming back. In today’s culture people get offended over anything, so their commitment sways back and forth like the waves of the sea. Up one day, down the next. “You’re really not going to get anywhere like that.” Commitment means surrendering our plans to GOD’s purpose and trusting HIS faithfulness to sustain us in whatever ministry or service we’re given, and it means being consistent.
“
“Spiritual maturity does not happen before commitment. Maturity happens after commitment.”
— Pastor Angel L. Rosa
That’s because maturity is built in the fight, in the struggle, where the character qualities we bring to the kingdom are formed. If we measure the price of commitment only by what we lose in the short term, comfort, control, and time, the math doesn’t add up. But after almost forty years in ministry, he told the church, it does. He got saved fifty years ago, and three months later he knew GOD had called him to full-time ministry. It didn’t happen overnight, because GOD had a lot of character issues to work out of him, and HE is still working some things out. “You can ask my wife.”
Along the way, he said, don’t compare yourself with other people. The people GOD uses are often not the ones you would qualify, and the people who rub you the wrong way may be in your life because GOD wants you to mature in that specific area. He also challenged the church on emotions. We are passionate people, but if we don’t rein in our feelings, GOD isn’t going to do it for us. “That’s why they call it self-control.” We let the SPIRIT of GOD discipline and disciple us until we can hear HIM say, be still and know that I am GOD.

Three Boundaries JESUS Draws

He urged everyone to take out their Bibles and notebooks, and not to just read the WORD but to study it. Even if it’s one verse, dig, he said, because it is a love letter to you and a living WORD. You may have read a passage before and it didn’t speak to you, but read it in the situation you’re in now and GOD will reveal truth that sets you free. Then he walked through Luke 9:57-62, where JESUS meets three people. Crowds were following HIM because they saw the miracles and the fish and loaves, and some people are still in church for what they can get from GOD. But if miracles were all it took, he said, the whole world would be saved already.

“Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay HIS head.”

Luke 9:58
The first boundary is total surrender. A man says, “I will follow you wherever you go,” and JESUS answers with the cost: the kingdom of GOD is about total surrender. “If HE’s not LORD of all, HE’s not LORD at all.” Some people want a partial relationship: I love JESUS, but HE can’t get into my politics, and HE had better stay out of my pocket. The second boundary is comfort. Servanthood and leadership come with no guarantee of physical comfort, so know what you’re committing to, and it won’t surprise you when it’s hard. “The devil is a liar. He’s not going to take me down, because I’m walking by faith and not by sight.” Not relying on feelings, committed all the way.
The third boundary is timing. When the man says, “first let me go and bury my father,” it sounds harsh, but Pastor Angel L. Rosa explained that in the ancient Middle Eastern culture of that day, the phrase didn’t mean the father was lying in a casket. It meant, let me stay home and take care of my parents until they pass, so I can secure my inheritance. In other words, excuses. He shared how it felt when GOD called him into full-time ministry and he had to give up a job that paid more than ministry would. He prayed that GOD would wait until he had enough saved, and the LORD said no. When GOD calls, it requires immediate obedience. Many people have a “first, let me” that keeps them from ever coming back to serve: first my finances, first this busy season, first when I’m older, first when I retire. “When I retire, then you’re dead.” A delayed yes, he said, is simply a polite no.
The fourth warning is divided focus, the hand on the plow that keeps looking back. Looking back is a lingering affection for the old lifestyle and the old freedom. He laughed about the days when he and his wife went to the beach whenever they liked, slept until nine or ten, never had to check on the stuff in the back cabinet, and never had to bake or cook for church. But JESUS isn’t looking for temporary volunteers. HE is looking for sustained servants, the kind who plan the lessons, prepare the packets, and text the youth to tell them they’re loved, week after week. “God wants everything.” And if you serve, serve all the way: be consistent, be faithful, and don’t do it halfway.

The Price of Commitment: Endurance and the Fourth Man in the Fire

So how do we do it? “The key word,” he said, “is endurance.” He took the church to Hebrews 12:1-2. Throw off everything that hinders: criticism, jealousy, backbiting, gossip, anything that stands in the way. Stay laser focused on what GOD has called you to do. And run the race marked out for you, because your race is different than hers and different than his. We are all running at different paces, so don’t expect someone to be at the level you are, and don’t expect them to be back where you were.

“Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on JESUS, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before HIM HE endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of GOD.”

Hebrews 12:1-2
When JESUS sits down, he pointed out, HE is finished. HE did everything HE is going to do, and now HE waits for you. Pastor Angel L. Rosa gave the Greek: the New Testament word for endurance is hypomone, and it literally means to remain under the weight. It is not passive, fatalistic resignation or just gritting your teeth. It is a courageous, forward-leaning stance that refuses to run away when the pressure intensifies. And the pressure is coming. But the church is alive, a living organism, and the SPIRIT that raised CHRIST from the dead lives in you. He doesn’t live in denial, he said. The enemy fights us at every corner, but greater is HE that is in me than he that is in the world, and no weapon formed against us will prosper. The blood of JESUS covers us, and the LORD sends angels to camp around those who fear HIM. Don’t live intimidated. “We’re in the army of the LORD, so we’ve got to start acting like soldiers.”
The ultimate test, he said, is unconditional commitment. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in Daniel 3 said “but if not,” trusting GOD even if HE didn’t deliver them. You will have your own “but if not” moments. But if nobody else comes to the prayer meeting. But if nobody praises me for the work I’ve done. But if nobody notices the gas I spent coming to church, and the tank is on empty. We often serve GOD with unstated conditions: I’ll be in ministry as long as ___. Stand persuaded instead. And sometimes GOD wants you in the fire, because you won’t see the fourth man standing outside watching everyone else go through it.
“
“You don’t know HE’s all you need until HE’s all you have.”
— Pastor Angel L. Rosa
He shared a story from his own early years as a young servant in Teen Challenge. A counselor over him threatened to recommend that he be kicked out of the program, and the LORD told him, “Do not fear man, but fear ME.” When the director found out what was going on, he dealt with it, and Pastor Angel L. Rosa stayed in the program and kept going. His lesson: sometimes the best thing to do when you’re being accused is to be quiet and let GOD fight for you. There are things you won’t figure out unless you’re in the fire, and the person pushing on you may be the one building you up. The question to ask is, “Who are you doing it for?” The pastor may not see everything you do, and as a church grows, the relationship with the pastor changes, because GOD raises up others to carry the care. Don’t be upset when that happens. Step up.

Is the Price Worth It?

What we go through is momentary compared to eternity, he reminded the church, pointing to 2 Corinthians 4:17. “I’ve been going through this for years,” someone says. “Well, think about eternity. It’s longer, believe me.” Then he turned to the apostle Paul, who lost his reputation and his credibility with his peers, criticized from both sides, and counted all his credentials and accolades as garbage compared to the surpassing worth of knowing CHRIST.

“What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing CHRIST JESUS my LORD, for whose sake I have lost all things.”

Philippians 3:8
So is the price of commitment worth it? “It is entirely worth it,” Pastor Angel L. Rosa said, “but only if you value the prize more than the price.” What does he value? “I value HIS approval.” He told the church he isn’t there because someone is paying him. He does it because he loves the church and loves them. He isn’t looking for popularity anymore, he said, and the WORD has developed in him the character to say certain things regardless of how people feel about him, even if it sometimes comes out harsh.
Then he asked the question that settles it. Is it worth coming on Tuesday? Is it worth coming on Sunday? Is it worth preparing messages when you wonder whether anyone is getting it, or going home to study and pray and believe GOD for greater things while you’re under attack? Why would anyone say yes? “It’s worth it when we look at the cross and see what JESUS did for us.” Whatever you’re facing, HE has already paid the price. HE was afflicted, hurt, beaten, betrayed, and spat on, for us, so that we can be free.
“It’s worth it when we look at the cross and see what JESUS did for us.”
Pastor Angel L. Rosa
He closed in prayer, with the church standing: committed first to the FATHER, to JESUS CHRIST our LORD and Savior, to one another in the body of CHRIST, and to our families and friends, and committed as a church to the vision of growing and reaching the lost for the kingdom of GOD. The Price of Commitment closes the four-week series From Servanthood to Commitment. His charge: choose obedience over feelings, remain under the weight, say “but if not,” and keep your eyes on the ONE who already paid the price. He told the church that next Tuesday will be a powerful time and encouraged everyone to let what they’ve heard marinate, believing that whatever they’re going through now is temporary, and GOD will take them through it.

Reflect & Respond

Where are you still saying “first, let me” to GOD, and what would immediate obedience look like for you this week?
