The Art of Communication — Part 1, Maximizing Your Marriage Series

Citizens of HEAVEN · Living on Earth

The art of communication is where every strong relationship either grows or quietly breaks down. That is where Pastor Angel Luis Rosa began a brand-new series at The Gathering Church on August 25, 2026 — Maximizing Your Marriage, a workshop built for couples but written for anyone who talks to another human being.

Most of us don’t listen to understand. We listen to reply. What would change in your home if that flipped?

“As the families go, so goes the church.”

Pastor Angel Luis Rosa opened by naming what he sees the enemy doing: waging war on families, and particularly on Christian families. Brothers who stop talking to brothers. Cousins who stop talking to cousins. Parents and children living in the same house without really speaking. “The worst thing in the world,” he told the room at The Gathering Church, “is for you to go to work and say, I’m happier at work than I am at home.”
He was quick to widen the invitation. Anyone thinking “this isn’t for me, I’m not married” should stay anyway, he said — because these are principles of relationship that apply at work, with family, with friends. And if it truly doesn’t apply to your season right now, “use it to minister to somebody else. Use it to encourage somebody else.” Pastor Rosa brings four decades of ministry to families along with degrees in psychology, counseling, and ministry leadership — but he was clear that none of it matters without the anointing. “Unless you’re anointed, academics really don’t work, because all you’re doing is relying on the natural.”
“The definition of art is to reveal what is already inside of you.”

The Art of Language Interpretation

Pastor Rosa broke the lesson into three parts — interpretation, listening, and understanding — and started with a scenario acted out live. A husband and wife are driving. She asks, “Would you like to stop for coffee?” He checks the gas gauge and the clock, says “No thank you, I’m fine,” and keeps driving. Ten miles later he discovers she is silently furious.
The reason, he explained, is that they were speaking two different languages. Men tend toward report language — facts, logic, solving the problem in front of them. Women tend toward rapport language — connection, emotion, sharing the experience. Neither one is wrong. But translating your spouse’s words through your own dialect guarantees you will keep missing each other.
He refused to let it be one-sided. Turning to the wives, Pastor Rosa said plainly: men are factual, they’re not wired to guess, and they cannot read minds or reliably take hints. He offered his own confession as evidence — sitting at home eating a donut while his wife waited for him to offer her some, only to learn later that she didn’t even want one. She just wanted to be asked.

“The measure of thought and study you give to the truth you hear will be the measure of virtue and knowledge that comes back to you.”

Mark 4:24

Hearing Is Not Listening

“Most of us don’t listen to understand,” Pastor Rosa said. “We listen to reply.” While a spouse is still talking, the brain is already assembling its defense, its counterargument, its solution. Real listening — active listening — engages the ears, the eyes, the heart, and full attention. Saying “go ahead, I’m listening” while watching TV does not count.
That is why he kept returning to one word: plan. Set aside time deliberately, away from distractions. Get a babysitter if that’s what it takes. Because when hard conversations get avoided instead of planned for, they don’t disappear — they accumulate. Pastor Rosa compared it to the old habit of collecting stamps: grievances saved up one at a time until a forgotten trash bag triggers years of stored hurt all at once. Sweep enough under the rug, he warned, and eventually there’s a bump in the relationship no one can walk around.
He also spoke about safety. Hearing what someone is truly saying requires creating a place where she feels safe enough to say what she actually means — because vulnerability is costly. A woman may carry a tough exterior and a tender heart at the same time, and if deep fears, loneliness, anger, or insecurity aren’t safe to voice, that’s the moment communication stops altogether.
“Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife.”
1 Peter 3:7

The Art of Communication Means Becoming a Student

Pastor Rosa drew the whole lesson to a point in 1 Peter 3:7. The honoring, he noted, comes after the understanding. “You can’t honor the person unless you understand the person.” Which means becoming an ongoing student of your spouse — and it works both ways.
He asked everyone to look at the person beside them and consider something uncomfortable: that is not the same person you married. People change, seasons change, hearts grow. And when someone says “you’re not the same person I married,” Pastor Rosa’s counseling-room answer is always the same — neither are you. Studying your spouse means dating her again, courting her again, getting acquainted all over. “If you want it to grow,” he said, “you’ve got to go.”
And none of it happens automatically. No one waves a wand over a marriage. Anointing with oil is good, prophetic words are good, but as Pastor Rosa put it, at the end of the day the work of the process still has to be walked out. To couples who feel everything is fine right now, he offered one honest caution: the storm will come. The question is whether you’ll be prepared when it does.
“If you want to know who you’re married to, you must commit to an endless journey of listening, learning, and leaning in.”

The art of communication is not a skill anyone is handed at school — it has to be learned on purpose, and then practiced at home. Part 1 laid the foundation. The series continues next week, and Pastor Rosa’s invitation stands wide open: bring a friend, a neighbor, a couple who needs it.

Reflect & Respond

In your closest relationship, are you listening to understand — or listening to reply? What would it take this week to become a student of that person again?
